WASH Project Launched to Solve Water Shortage in Bungoma Schools

by KenyaPolls

Bungoma County, in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, public health officials, and NGOs such as AMREF Health Africa, USAID-Kenya, and Vast Guard, has launched the WASH Sanitation Project to improve access to safe water and hygiene facilities in schools.
Key Highlights:
Many schools in Bungoma lack sufficient clean water points and storage facilities.
Boarding school students require 20 liters of water per day, while day scholars need 5 liters.
Recommended sanitation standards include one pit latrine per 25 girls and per 30 boys, plus functional, special-needs-friendly urinals.
The project targets reducing waterborne diseases, such as bilharzia, which currently has a prevalence of 4.6% among students, to below 2%.
WASH is being implemented across Bungoma, Vihiga, Kakamega, and Trans Nzoia counties, improving sanitation for quality education.
The initiative is aimed at improving student attendance, academic performance, and overall health by tackling preventable infections caused by poor water and sanitation facilities.
