Wanga Urges Implementation of Ruto-Raila 10-Point Agenda with Victim Compensation

ODM leader Gladys Wanga has called for immediate compensation for families of those who lost lives and sustained injuries during protests, urging parliamentarians to set aside funds for the affected individuals. During a public engagement in Rongi, Migori County on February 18, Wanga emphasized that victim compensation was non-negotiable, stressing the importance of implementing the 10-point agreement reached between President William Ruto and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. ‘We must stand firm on the 10-point agenda, particularly regarding compensation for those affected by post-election violence,’ Wanga asserted. ‘Parliamentarians should allocate funds to compensate people injured or killed during demonstrations,’ she added. The Homa Bay governor further stated that ODM would not back down from its reform calls, maintaining that securing justice for victims remained a key priority as the party intensifies discussions with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA). In addition to compensation, Wanga highlighted that the party’s 10-point agenda also focuses on youth employment and enhanced devolution funding, asserting that counties must receive more resources to drive development and generate job opportunities. ‘Our young people have been jobless for too long; citizens need financial stability. Devolution funding must also be increased. These are among our key demands,’ she explained. Wanga’s recent statements follow a high court ruling last year that deemed unconstitutional the 18-member panel established by President Ruto to manage victim compensation. The panel, formed in August 2025, was tasked with verifying and compensating victims of police brutality and violence from recent protests. Reports indicate that over 6,000 compensation petitions have been submitted, though legal proceedings have delayed their processing. Beyond victim compensation, Wanga reinforced ODM’s dedication to bolstering its political standing in preparation for the 2027 general elections. The ODM chair declared that the party fully supports Oburu Odinga as its leader and is prepared to enter pre-election coalition negotiations with like-minded political parties. She indicated that ODM would only accept a proportional share of governance, seeking the deputy presidency in the 2027 elections. However, she dismissed any collaboration with parties associated with promoting tribalism and hate speech, clarifying that ODM would only partner with organizations committed to inclusivity and fairness. Despite internal conflicts within the Orange Party, it has already indicated its willingness to negotiate with UDA.
