Wajir County Launches Camel Marathon to Promote Peace and Tourism

by KenyaPolls

Wajir County hosted the inaugural Horn of Africa Camel Marathon on November 2, 2025—a 25km endurance race for camels and riders across the Chalbi Desert. 48 teams from Kenya, Ethiopia, and Somalia participated, promoting cross-border dialogue amid pastoralist tensions. Winner: Somali-Kenyan duo Abdi Hassan and camel *Dhalan* (2:11:34). The event included peace dialogues, traditional poetry, and youth vocational fairs. Funded by IGAD and EU’s Peace Facility, it reduced clan skirmishes by 44% in participating zones (per county security report). UNESCO recommended inclusion in the Intangible Cultural Heritage list. A camel unites us faster than a bullet divides us, said elder Fatuma Adan. Plans for 2026 include women’s and U-18 categories.
