In a novel fan engagement experiment, rivals Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards hosted a virtual Great Rift Derby in a dedicated metaverse space ahead of their physical match. Over 5,000 fans used VR headsets and PCs to create avatars, congregate in virtual replicas of Nyayo Stadium, and participate in games and chants. The event, sponsored by a crypto exchange, featured virtual merchandise stalls. This connects our diaspora fans and the tech-savvy youth in an immersive communal space, said a Gor Mahia official. The experiment is being studied for future revenue streams.
