Victor Kiplangat emerged as a surprise world champion in the men’s marathon at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest. The relatively unknown athlete ran a tactically brilliant race, breaking away from the lead pack in the latter stages to win gold. His victory came on a day when his more celebrated compatriot, Eliud Kipchoge, dropped out of the race. Kiplangat, who had previously won gold at the Commonwealth Games, demonstrated immense mental fortitude and physical strength, particularly in the challenging heat. His win was a significant moment for Kenyan marathon running, proving the depth of talent in the country.
