Tensions Flare in Ukambani Ahead of President Ruto’s Mashujaa Day Visit
Political temperatures are soaring in the Ukambani region as President William Ruto prepares for his Mashujaa Day celebrations in Kitui County. The visit, scheduled for October 20 at Ithookwe Stadium, has ignited fierce rivalry between pro-government leaders and opposition figures led by Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and former deputy president Rigathi Gachagua. Both camps have intensified their campaigns, with Gachagua and Kalonzo urging residents to reject Ruto’s overtures while United Democratic Alliance (UDA) loyalists rally locals to embrace the government’s development agenda.
In recent weeks, Ukambani has become the epicenter of Kenya’s latest political showdown. Ruto’s allies—including UDA National Organising Secretary and Mwala MP Vincent Kawaya, Kitui South MP Rachael Nyamai, and Kitui East MP Nimrod Mbai—have been holding a series of rallies across Kitui, Makueni, and Machakos counties. They have pointed to ongoing infrastructure and social programs as proof of the president’s commitment to the region, traditionally a stronghold of the opposition. Kawaya defended the government’s track record, accusing Gachagua of double standards and divisive politics, saying, It is illogical for leaders who once enjoyed state power to now discourage progress for our people. The leaders also called for calm and unity during the president’s visit, urging residents to welcome Ruto in the spirit of national celebration rather than political confrontation.
Beyond the political theatrics, the visit carries heavy symbolic weight. Ukambani has long been courted by successive administrations, and Ruto’s tour is seen as a crucial test of his ability to win support from regions that largely voted against him in 2022. Kawaya hinted at key policy adjustments, including expanding cancer care funding under the Social Health Authority and resuming dialogue with striking lecturers to restore normalcy in universities. Yet as opposition figures struggle to unite ahead of the 2027 elections, Ruto’s allies are keen to frame his leadership as one of inclusivity and tangible results. Whether the president’s development message will overshadow the growing opposition alliance remains to be seen, but one thing is certain—Ukambani’s political battleground is heating up fast.
