The government has enrolled nearly 2,000 drought-affected households to receive cash transfers as part of an initiative designed to improve food security across Turkana County.
The program also encompassed providing food assistance to 10 educational institutions located in Suguta and Lokori Kochodin areas.
Patrick Losike, who serves as County Executive for Public Service, Administration, and Disaster Management, verified that the Kenya Red Cross stands among the development partners aiding the County Government’s drought response initiatives.
Rukia Abubakar, Regional Coordinator for Kenya Red Cross Turkana, explained that the relief operation was managed through the County Steering Group to avoid redundant efforts. “Our coverage area was designated to Suguta and Lokori Kochodin, whereas other partners concentrated on different critical zones,” she stated.
The assessment process included evaluating forthcoming requirements, with Abubakar highlighting that conditions remain dire, threatening both human populations and livestock.
Community leaders, including Chief Ekiru Alokas, commended the County Government and Kenya Red Cross for working alongside residents to ensure impartial beneficiary selection, stressing that vulnerable segments received priority during registration.
Despite appreciating the assistance, local officials called upon authorities and collaborating organizations to expand the recipient base and incorporate livestock nourishment into the aid package to preserve pastoral ways of life.
This undertaking exemplifies persistent endeavors to reinforce social safety nets and build adaptive capacity among households impacted by drought in the region.
