Bungoma, Kenya — Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary, Dr. Alfred Mutua, visited Bungoma County on March 27, 2024, as part of his nationwide campaign, #UtaliiFresh, aimed at revitalizing Kenya’s tourism sector. During the visit, Dr. Mutua emphasized the need for counties to develop cultural and eco-tourism experiences that attract visitors while benefiting local communities. Accompanied by Principal Secretary Ms. Silvia Museiya, he was received by Governor Ken Lusaka and county leadership, who highlighted Bungoma’s rich natural and cultural assets.

Dr. Mutua identified key attractions in the county, including Nabuyole Falls in Webuye, and proposed its development as a hiking and adventure site. He also pledged national support for improving local infrastructure, such as the construction of Matulo airstrip, promotion of the Luhya cultural and food festival, and marketing of the Kamabeka dance as a distinctive cultural experience. The CS noted that leveraging Western Kenya’s forests, waterfalls, traditional music, and dance could generate significant revenue for local communities while fostering responsible tourism and biodiversity conservation.

Governor Lusaka welcomed the collaboration, committing county resources to transform these plans into tangible projects. He expressed optimism that Bungoma could become a model of sustainable tourism, blending cultural heritage with natural attractions. Dr. Mutua’s visit also included tours of the Sangalo Cultural Centre and Buteyo Miti Park Conservancy, underscoring the government’s commitment to sustainable development and positioning Bungoma as a destination capable of contributing meaningfully to Kenya’s economic growth through tourism.
