MSEA Kakamega Hosts Economic Forum Led by CS Oparanya to Boost MSME Growth
The Micro and Small Enterprises Authority (MSEA) Kakamega office convened a high-level economic forum that brought together national and county stakeholders to strengthen support for micro, small, and medium enterprises in the region. The event, officiated by the Cabinet Secretary for Cooperatives and MSMEs Development, Hon. Dr. Wycliffe A. Oparanya, highlighted the government’s commitment to accelerating grassroots economic transformation. A key milestone during the forum was the official handover of common-user machinery to the Masooreki Jua Kali Association, a move expected to improve production efficiency among local artisans. Youth and women groups from several constituencies also received Uwezo Fund cheques, offering timely financial relief to boost their business ventures.
In his address, CS Oparanya emphasized the need for structured group formations to unlock government-backed funding and technical support, particularly urging youth and persons with disabilities to take advantage of available opportunities. Representing the MSEA CEO, Ms. Moureen Chogo underscored the importance of wider sensitization on MSEA programs, formalization of business groups, and the adoption of innovation in enterprise development. She noted that ongoing initiatives such as the NYOTA and KJET programs are instrumental in strengthening entrepreneurial skills, promoting market linkages, and providing technical support to MSMEs. MSEA’s Head of Infrastructure Development, Eng. Karani, conducted an assessment of the Constituency Industrial Development Centres (CIDCs) and called for more grassroots awareness to ensure full utilization of government-funded workspaces and equipment.
Stakeholders who attended the forum—including representatives from Uwezo Fund, Kenya Industrial Estates (KIE), the Youth Enterprise Fund, and the Hustler Fund—praised the initiative as a significant step in empowering small businesses within Kakamega County. Local MSEA leaders, including County Head Doreen Nandwa and Enterprise Development Officer Newton Ojiambo, affirmed their commitment to supporting MSMEs and ensuring that government investments translate into tangible economic benefits. Looking ahead, participants expressed optimism that strengthened partnerships, better resource utilization, and continuous sensitization will help create a more enabling environment for small enterprises. With the national government reaffirming that the MSME sector is central to Kenya’s economic future, the forum positioned Kakamega as a key player in driving sustainable and inclusive growth.
