Nairobi, Kenya — King Charles III and Queen Camilla are set to engage Kenya’s burgeoning tech sector during their State Visit from October 31 to November 3, 2023. As part of the visit, His Majesty will attend a technology showcase meeting local entrepreneurs and startup founders driving innovation in the country. Kenya’s startup ecosystem, ranked third in Africa and first in East Africa, hosts over 1,000 startups spanning sectors from fintech to agritech, reflecting the nation’s dynamic digital economy.
Kenya’s tech growth can be traced back to 2006 when the deployment of an underwater internet cable spurred connectivity and mobile adoption, culminating in groundbreaking innovations such as M-Pesa. The establishment of iHub in 2008 and initiatives like Tandaa Grants have further nurtured entrepreneurship, enabling startups to scale and attract global investment. Over the years, Kenya has built a supportive environment for tech innovation, fostering collaboration between government, private sector, and international investors.
The royal visit highlights the close partnership between Kenya and the United Kingdom, coinciding with celebrations of Kenya’s 60th independence anniversary. During their trip, the King and Queen will meet President William Ruto, the First Lady, government officials, young tech innovators, and future leaders. The programme emphasizes mutual prosperity, youth opportunity, sustainable development, and climate action, reflecting Kenya’s ambition to position itself as a leading hub for technology and entrepreneurship in Africa.
