Cortec Mining has resumed titanium extraction in Kwale County after signing a landmark Ksh3.2 billion community benefit agreement with Taita Taveta County. The deal, finalized in January 2024, includes equity shares, jobs for locals, and a Ksh500 million development fund. Operations had been suspended since 2022 due to protests over land and environmental concerns. The mine will produce 350,000 tonnes of ilmenite annually, earning Kenya Ksh15 billion in export revenue. The Ministry of Mining called it a model for responsible resource extraction. Environmental monitoring will be led by a joint community-company committee.
