Taita Taveta announces 100% waiver on land rate penalties

by KenyaPolls

Taita Taveta Governor Andrew Mwadime has announced a sweeping 100 percent waiver on penalties and interests accrued on unpaid land rates, a move aimed at encouraging compliance among landowners. The waiver, which applies to those who pay their outstanding principal in full, is valid for 39 days from the notice’s publication, giving residents until October 15, 2025, to regularize their accounts. In addition, the county is offering a 40 percent reduction on the principal amount for those who pay the remaining 60 percent within the same period.

The governor, through County Executive Committee Member for Finance Elijah Mwanzo, emphasized that the initiative seeks to boost revenue collection for county development while facilitating a smooth transition to the new valuation roll. Mwadime highlighted that similar waivers have been recently announced in other counties, including Kisumu and Nyeri, as part of broader efforts to enhance economic recovery and encourage timely payment of land rates.

Residents and stakeholders have welcomed the decision, noting that it provides an opportunity to settle long-standing debts without incurring additional financial burden. The move is expected to improve compliance rates and support the county’s development projects, reinforcing the county government’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for growth and investment.
