Survey shows rising adoption of smart farming in Kenya

A recent survey reveals that Kenya is experiencing a notable increase in the adoption of smart farming technologies across the country. Farmers, startups, and agritech innovators are increasingly implementing tools such as artificial intelligence (AI), drone monitoring, precision irrigation, and data analytics to improve crop yields, optimize resource use, and reduce post-harvest losses. The rise in adoption is supported by national programs such as the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy launched on 27 March 2025, which provides a framework for AI integration and ethical governance across sectors including agriculture, and the Kenya AI Skilling Alliance (KAISA) launched on 29 October 2025, which equips innovators and startups with training, mentorship, and resources. Pilot projects highlighted in the survey include AI-assisted crop disease detection, automated solar-powered irrigation, and predictive market analytics, demonstrating tangible benefits for farmers in both rural and urban areas.
Experts analyzing the survey note that while adoption is growing rapidly, continued progress will require investment in digital infrastructure, inclusive access, and robust data governance. Ethical AI use and digital literacy are also critical to ensure that all stakeholders benefit from these innovations. Looking ahead, Kenya’s accelerating adoption of smart farming is expected to improve food security, drive innovation, create job opportunities, and solidify the country’s leadership in Africa’s technology-driven agriculture sector.
