State to Strategically Resolve Land Disputes to Tame Insecurity in Taita Taveta
The national government has announced a strategic plan to conclusively resolve long-standing land disputes in Taita Taveta County, identifying them as a primary cause of persistent insecurity. The initiative was unveiled by the County Commissioner, who stated that historical land grievances and conflicting claims have been the main trigger of violent conflicts, often pitting communities against each other and against private ranchers.
The new strategy involves a multi-agency team comprising the National Land Commission (NLC), the Ministry of Lands, and the security committee. The team will embark on a rigorous exercise to verify land ownership, digitize land records, and expedite the issuance of title deeds to rightful owners. The Commissioner emphasized that resolving the land question is fundamental to achieving lasting peace and unlocking the county’s economic potential.
