Elgeyo Marakwet Intensifies War on Illicit Brews, Seizes Massive Consignment
Authorities in Elgeyo Marakwet County have intensified the multi-agency war against illicit brews, leading to the seizure and destruction of a massive consignment of illegal alcohol. The operation, spearheaded by the National Government Administration Officers (NGAO) and the police, targeted hidden brewing dens and distribution networks, resulting in the destruction of thousands of litres of chang’aa, busaa, and counterfeit spirits.
The County Commissioner stated that the crackdown is a decisive response to the devastating social and health consequences of the illicit trade, which include a rise in domestic violence, mental illness, and the erosion of family structures. He warned that the security teams will sustain the pressure with continuous raids and surveillance to prevent the cartels from re-establishing their operations. Several suspects were arrested and will be prosecuted.
Local administrators, chiefs, and village elders have been mobilized to identify and report all individuals involved in the illegal trade. The county security committee is also conducting public barazas to educate residents on the dangers of substance abuse. This intensified campaign is part of a nationwide effort to eradicate the vice and restore the social and economic well-being of communities.
