Security Officers Flush Out Somali Camel Herders from Kitui County
A multi-agency security team has successfully flushed out a group of Somali camel herders who had illegally crossed into Kitui County, ending a prolonged period of tension and conflict with local farmers. The operation, which took place in the vast and arid areas bordering Tana River County, was launched to address the destruction of crops and environmental degradation caused by the invasive livestock.
The herders, who had driven hundreds of camels into the county in search of pasture, were accused of trespassing on private farms and communal lands, leading to confrontations with local residents. The camels were reported to have consumed and trampled crops, exacerbating food insecurity in the region already struggling with the effects of persistent drought. Local leaders had issued numerous complaints, citing the economic and social disruption caused by the incursion.
Kitui County Commissioner Erastus Mbui confirmed the operation, stating that the security team ensured the herders and their livestock were escorted back to their area of origin. We will not allow any form of illegal encroachment that threatens the livelihoods of our people. Our farmers have suffered enough, and it was imperative to restore order and protect their property, Mbui stated. He emphasized that the government would maintain a vigilant presence along the border to prevent a recurrence.
The resolution of the standoff has been welcomed by residents and local leaders, who see it as a necessary step towards safeguarding agricultural productivity and community harmony. However, the incident highlights the recurring conflicts over scarce resources in Kenya’s arid and semi-arid regions. As climate variability continues to strain traditional grazing patterns, there are growing calls for a sustainable, cross-county framework to manage pastoralist movements and prevent future invasions.
