Safaricom’s Fuliza overdraft service has crossed 10 million active users, becoming East Africa’s largest instant credit platform. Launched in 2019, Fuliza allows M-Pesa users to complete transactions when short of cash, with limits up to Ksh70,000. In 2023, it facilitated Ksh1.2 trillion in transactions and maintained a 97% repayment rate. CEO Peter Ndegwa said Fuliza has reduced reliance on predatory lenders and enabled small businesses to manage cash flow. The service uses AI-driven credit scoring based on transaction history. Regulators have praised its inclusion impact but urged transparency in fee structures. Safaricom plans to integrate Fuliza with savings and insurance products in 2024 to build holistic financial health for users.
