Safaricom and Vodacom have completed the integration of M-Pesa platforms across Kenya, Tanzania, Mozambique, DRC, and Ethiopia, enabling instant, low-cost cross-border transfers. Launched in April 2024, the service allows users to send and receive money in local currency within seconds at fees as low as 1%. Over Ksh12 billion has moved in the first two months, primarily for remittances, trade, and education. The system uses blockchain for settlement and complies with anti-money laundering rules. CEO Peter Ndegwa called it a historic step toward a borderless digital economy in Africa, supporting AfCFTA’s vision of seamless financial integration.
