President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) is grappling with a significant internal revolt as a faction of Members of Parliament allied to the party have publicly rejected the newly constituted Party Nominations Board. The MPs, led by the outspoken member for Gatanga, Edward Muriu, accuse the party headquarters of stacking the board with individuals loyal to a small clique within the presidency, sidelining other regions. We cannot preach bottom-up yet our party practices top-down imposition. This board, as it stands, is designed to handpick candidates for the next election, and we will not allow it, Muriu declared at a press conference in Parliament Buildings. The rebellion threatens to undermine party discipline ahead of the next general election.
