Residents Torch Homes of Alleged Robbery Suspects in Migori Vigilante Attack
Frustration over persistent insecurity boiled over in Migori’s Nyatike sub-county this week as residents took the law into their own hands, setting fire to homes belonging to individuals suspected of involvement in a series of violent robberies. The vigilante action followed a spate of attacks in the Kachieng’ area, where armed gangs have repeatedly targeted local households, stealing livestock and personal belongings.
According to local accounts, the community identified several individuals believed to be part of a criminal network responsible for the recent crimes. Armed with anger and makeshift weapons, a group of youths surrounded and torched at least three homes, destroying property and forcing the suspects’ families to flee. No casualties were reported, but the incident has heightened tensions in the area, with fears of retaliatory attacks.
Police from the Migori County command confirmed the incident and have since increased patrols in Kachieng’ to prevent further violence. While acknowledging the residents’ grievances, County Commissioner David Gitonga urged the public to avoid vigilante actions. We understand the anger, but destroying property and taking the law into your own hands is illegal and only worsens the situation. We encourage residents to share information with security agencies for lawful action, he stated.
The torching of suspects’ homes reflects a growing loss of faith in formal security structures across Migori, where armed robberies and gang violence have become commonplace. As law enforcement struggles to contain the situation, community-led retaliation is emerging as a dangerous but recurring response. The incident underscores the urgent need for more effective policing and community engagement to restore trust and prevent further cycles of violence.
