Business in Machakos town came to a halt Wednesday afternoon as hundreds of youths supporting Sammy Kioko over unpaid county dues stormed the county headquarters to protest.
The comedian claims to have supplied goods worth 19 million to the county government last year, an allegation the county government has dismissed as false, leading to ongoing confrontation between the comedian and authorities.
Youths gathered at Machakos county headquarters today in solidarity with the popular Ukambani comedian, who was reportedly assaulted by county officials yesterday. They called on Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka to mediate for a peaceful resolution.
However, Machakos County government representative Nathaniel Nganga, who arrived at the protest site, stated that Sammy Kioko’s name does not appear in records of Movata Fashion and Design Ltd, which he claims to own. The county affirmed its commitment to pay all legitimate contractors according to the annual budget.
Police used teargas to disperse the growing crowd of protesters and secure the county offices, which closed early today.
