Tourism Investment Driving Kenya’s Economic Growth, Says President Ruto
Nairobi, Kenya
President William Ruto has highlighted tourism as a key driver of Kenya’s economic growth, emphasizing the sector’s role in generating revenue and employment opportunities. Speaking at the Port of Mombasa during the arrival of the cruise ship Norwegian Dawn, which carried 2,200 tourists and over 1,000 crew members, the President underscored the government’s commitment to maintaining a conducive environment for investment in tourism. According to Ruto, Kenya’s tourism revenue reached approximately KSh450 billion in 2024, reflecting the sector’s growing contribution to the national economy.
The President pointed out that Kenya is rich in unique tourist attractions, including pristine beaches along the Kenyan Coast, national parks and game reserves, diverse landscapes, and vibrant cultural experiences. He noted that cruise tourism, which had slowed in previous years, is rebounding, with 6,500 cruise visitors recorded last year and expectations of several more ships docking this year. I am proud to welcome visitors as we establish Kenya as a destination for tourism. Already, 800 guests have traveled to Amboseli, showing the sector’s positive impact, Ruto said, adding that strategic investments in infrastructure, marketing, and enriched tourism experiences will help the country reach a target of five million tourists by 2027.
Tourism Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano emphasized that the arrival marked the highest number of cruise passengers received in Kenya at once over the past decade. President Ruto encouraged the private sector to expand hospitality facilities to accommodate the growing influx of tourists. The event was attended by key officials including Cabinet Secretaries Davis Chirchir and Salim Mvurya, Mombasa Governor Abdulswamad Nassir, and Kenya Ports Authority Managing Director William Ruto. Passengers on board the Norwegian Dawn were set to enjoy excursions along Kenya’s coast, highlighting the country’s commitment to delivering high-quality and immersive tourism experiences that boost both regional and national economic development.
