Three police officers were injured in Garissa when an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) struck their vehicle. According to reports, the three were injured when an IED hit a water bowser they were traveling in Fafi Sub-County on Monday, February 23. After the incident, the officers were taken to a nearby health facility for medical attention before being airlifted to Nairobi for specialized treatment. The water bowser was severely damaged in the attack, with its front section completely wrecked. Security agencies in the region have launched investigations into the incident. It is unclear where the police officers were traveling and whether the water bowser was carrying water or was empty. The incident occurred as security agencies across the country intensify their crackdown on criminal elements, particularly those involved in terror activities. A week earlier, officers from the Counter Terrorism Policing Unit disrupted a planned terror attack targeting Nairobi that was allegedly linked to suspected Al-Shabaab militants. In a statement on Wednesday, February 18, the officers explained that the intervention followed investigations into the terrorists’ movements, communications, and logistical networks. During the operation, explosive devices intended for use in an attack within Nairobi were seized. The unit claimed that the suspects were allegedly planning to carry out the attack during the holy month of Ramadan, a period observed by Muslims worldwide through prayer and fasting. Additionally, the officers revealed that intelligence reports indicated the group was also planning to kidnap foreign nationals. According to a statement from authorities, ‘Plans by the terrorist group Al-Shabaab to kill many Kenyans in Nairobi have once again been foiled by the intelligence agency.’
