Narok Police Use Tear Gas to Disperse Mob Protesting Insecurity
Police in Narok town deployed tear gas to break up a tense standoff after an angry mob blocked the Narok–Bomet highway, demanding action over rising insecurity in the area. The protest followed reports that a young man was killed at K24 Estate by suspected robbers, sparking outrage among boda-boda (motorcycle) operators and residents.
According to local reports, the mob had seized a middle-aged man whom they accused of terrorising the community. While the suspect narrowly escaped death as he was attacked with stones, knives, and rungu sticks, police intervened before the situation escalated further.
Motorists were left stranded for hours as the road was barricaded, prompting officers to act swiftly to restore order.
Protest leaders, including Narok Peace Chairman Joshua Kaputa, condemned what they described as an organized gang operating in the county. They blamed the violence on outsiders transported from other counties and called on the security team, led by Narok County Commissioner Isaac Masinde, to step up efforts to protect the community.
The demonstrators said crime has worsened in Narok, making it difficult for residents to feel safe even in their own homes.
In response to the unrest, authorities have promised to address gaps in security. A joint press statement from the county security team said they are boosting patrols and will establish a new police post in the K24 area to improve response times.
Meanwhile, local leaders urged the public to cooperate with law enforcement by reporting any suspicious behaviour, emphasizing that community engagement is vital for reducing crime.
