The National Police Service (NPS) has verified a security incident that took place on Monday, January 26, 2026, in the Hulugho region of Garissa County, which led to the fatalities of a local chief and a teacher from Hulugho Primary School.
According to a press release from the Office of the Inspector General, the NPS indicated that a multi-agency security contingent has been dispatched and is currently tracking down the suspects. The authorities have cordoned off the location, and efforts to capture those involved are in progress.
Police have intensified security patrols and operations throughout Hulugho and neighboring regions to safeguard the local population.
The NPS has advised the community to stay calm and alert while cooperating with security authorities. Individuals possessing information helpful to the investigation have been encouraged to report to the nearest police facility.
The National Police Service reaffirmed its dedication to safeguarding citizens’ lives and assets and guaranteed the public that inquiries are being conducted.
This follows an appeal by teachers at Hulugho Primary School for reassignments to what they consider safer locations due to security apprehensions.
Following the murder of their colleague, the teachers expressed their refusal to continue working in the area, stating that their personal security was no longer assured.
“We are grieving our colleague who was murdered, and it is evident that we lack proper protection,” stated a teacher named Meshack Makwara.
A female teacher residing adjacent to the victim’s dwelling recounted how the attackers specifically targeted him, noting that they interrogated her before expelling the teacher and taking his life. Based on the teachers’ accounts, the assailants also killed the local chief in a similar manner.
The teachers have announced their intention to gather at the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) headquarters in Garissa until their relocation demands are met.
