Police, Boda Boda Operators Move to Tighten Security Amid Rising Motorcycle Theft
Police in Kirinyaga County have partnered with boda boda operators to implement new security measures in response to a sharp increase in motorcycle thefts. The initiative was launched during a security meeting between riders’ representatives and the area police command, where it was agreed that all operators must formally register their details, including national ID and motorcycle logbook, with their respective Sacco leadership and police stations.
Under the new framework, boda boda operators have been designated as the first line of defense. They are required to scrutinize the documents of anyone attempting to sell a motorcycle and to immediately report any suspicious transactions or individuals to the police. The riders have also committed to noting down the registration numbers of motorcycles used by criminals in snatching phones and bags, to aid in tracking.
The County Police Commander assured the operators of their safety and confidentiality when providing information. He warned thieves that the tightened network between riders and police would make it increasingly difficult to steal or dispose of motorcycles in the county. This collaborative model is expected to significantly reduce the thefts that have plagued the vital transport sector.
