Parents ask Government to train teachers in advance

by KenyaPolls

MIGORI, Kenya — As Kenya approaches the historic transition of grade nine learners to senior secondary schools in 2026, parents are calling on the government to ensure teachers are adequately trained to handle the Competency-Based Education (CBE) curriculum. Julius Kiberenge, Chairperson of the Kenya National Parents Association, Migori chapter, emphasized that early preparation is key to avoiding challenges experienced during previous transitions.

Kiberenge highlighted that during the first transition from grade six to seven under the CBC framework, schools faced shortages of trained teachers, learning materials, and logistical support, leading to disruptions in learning. He urged the Ministry of Education and the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) to employ more teachers and equip them with the necessary skills to deliver the senior school curriculum effectively. We want the government to prepare our senior secondary school teachers before 2026 to avoid repeating the gaps witnessed during the junior secondary school transition, Kiberenge said.

Beyond staffing, Kiberenge also called for timely disbursement of capitation funds to enable smooth school operations. He urged school principals to adopt flexible approaches to handling fee balances so that students are not sent home due to financial constraints. The parents’ representative stressed that with proper planning, adequate resources, and well-trained teachers, Kenya can achieve a seamless transition to senior secondary education under the CBE framework.
