Officers Net Hundreds of Litres of Illicit Brew in Kitui County Crackdown
Security officers in Kitui County have netted hundreds of litres of illicit brew in a sustained crackdown on illegal alcohol. The operation, which took place across several sub-counties, led to the confiscation of Kangara and other illegal spirits, dealing a blow to the underground trade that has been linked to social and health issues in the region.
The multi-agency team, comprising the National Police Service and officers from the National Government Administration (NGAO), targeted known brewing and distribution hotspots. During the raids, officers dismantled brewing sites and arrested several individuals believed to be behind the production and sale of the illicit liquor. The confiscated brews were subsequently destroyed in a public exercise, signaling the authorities’ zero-tolerance stance.
Kitui County Commissioner Erastus Mbui reiterated the government’s commitment to eradicating the vice, stating that the operation would be continuous. We are determined to restore the dignity of our families and protect our youth from the harmful effects of these illicit substances. Those engaging in this illegal business will face the full force of the law, he warned.
The crackdown has been welcomed by local leaders and community members, who have long decried the impact of illicit alcohol on community cohesion and productivity. As the operation intensifies, authorities are urging public cooperation through the reporting of illegal brewing activities, emphasizing that security is a shared responsibility.
