The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party leader, Oburu Oginga, has declared that the party is prepared to accept the Deputy President position in upcoming negotiations with the ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
Speaking during a consultative meeting at Siaya County Assembly chambers, Dr. Oburu refuted assertions by some government officials that the Deputy President’s seat is not negotiable. He emphasized that ODM remains committed to talks that will protect the party’s interests within the broad-based government.
The ODM leader underscored that the party’s participation in the broad-based government remains steadfast, noting they would not abandon the arrangement established by the late Raila Odinga.
“We’re going to negotiate hard, we won’t leave anything out. Those who thought we’re not going to demand for Deputy Presidency, that is one of them. It’s not the only issue but it is one of them,” he stated.
“Whether it’s disturbing some people or catching others on the wrong side, that is not our worry. Ours is to worry about our people and our party. We want in future to be in power.”
Dr. Oburu urged members of the Luo community to maintain unity and support ODM, explaining that solidarity would enhance their negotiating position in the changing political landscape.
Siaya County Assembly Speaker George Okode expressed the assembly’s support for Dr. Oburu’s leadership, confirming that Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) firmly back the ODM leader.
The meeting convened Members of the Siaya County Assembly and the ODM party leader in what was described as a strategy session for upcoming political engagements.
Dr. Oburu also encouraged residents to attend in large numbers for the ODM rally titled “Linda Ground,” scheduled for Saturday. He noted that the rally would also serve as his homecoming ceremony following his election as party leader.
The event is expected to draw thousands of supporters as ODM plots its next political moves amid ongoing government realignments.
