The division within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) is expected to intensify as two competing factions organize concurrent gatherings, signaling a new chapter following the death of long-serving leader Raila Odinga.
In a significant gesture, Party Leader Dr. Oburu Odinga will lead the ‘Linda Ground’ contingent to the historic Tononoka Grounds in Mombasathe same location where his late brother once dominated Coast politics with landmark declarations.
The ‘Linda Ground’ camp departed Nairobi for Mombasa this morning for the major gathering at Tononoka grounds.
Today’s event concludes a significant week that started with the National Executive Committee’s (NEC) contentious resolution to remove Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, a decision subsequently suspended by the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal.
However, the attempt to dismiss Sifuna appears to have counterproductive effects, elevating the Nairobi Senator to prominence. Sifuna is now heading his ‘Linda Mwananchi’ group in Kitengela, an event that has gained substantial traction following his public defiance of the NEC’s “unlawful” directive.
Throughout Saturday, the ‘Linda Ground’ faction conducted vigorous mobilization across Mombasa. Guided by businessman Oketch Salah and Jaoko Oburu, convoys traversed the coastal city, presenting the Tononoka gathering as a “critical moment” for the party’s traditional support base.
Concurrently, the ‘Linda Mwananchi’ campaign has experienced a surge in community backing. Pro-Sifuna supporters have allegedly inundated the faction with contributions, including branded t-shirts featuring the slogan “Mimi ni Sifuna” (I am Sifuna)a phrase that has rapidly become a unifying cry for his followers.
The Kitengela assembly features an impressive roster of “young Turks” and experienced legal professionals, including Siaya Governor James Orengo, Deputy Party Leader Godfrey Osotsi, and Embakasi East MP Babu Owino.
The Sifuna group is scheduled to commence their procession after a church service at ACK St. Peter’s Orkeju, Emunyak in Kajiado. Meanwhile, at the coast, the ‘Linda Ground’ supporters will begin assembling at Tononoka from 1:00 PM, setting the stage for a day that could potentially determine the future direction of Kenya’s largest opposition party.
