Nyeri residents have welcomed progress on a new state-of-the-art maternity block at the Nyeri Town Health Centre, with the facility expected to officially open in September. Governor Mutahi Kahiga, who toured the site during an inspection visit, said the centre is nearing completion and will be fully equipped and staffed before operations begin. He noted that the project, implemented through a partnership between the County Government of Nyeri and the Japanese Organisation for International Cooperation in Family Planning (JOICFP), will significantly boost maternal and newborn healthcare in the region.
The new block is designed to accommodate a 35-bed antenatal and postnatal unit alongside a Maternal and Child Health clinic, a newborn unit, specialized consultation rooms, a laboratory, and a delivery suite. It also includes auxiliary facilities such as a Central Sterile Supply Department (CSSD), nurses’ stations, offices, a kitchen, and laundry services—making it one of the most comprehensive maternity wings in the county. Governor Kahiga commended the implementation team for completing major works within a year of groundbreaking, saying the project reflects strong coordination between partners. He added that the facility is a key element of the county’s broader health agenda, which prioritizes reducing maternal and neonatal deaths and easing congestion at the Nyeri County Referral Hospital.
Once operational, the maternity block will serve an estimated 30,000 residents from Majengo, Ngangarithi, Nyeri Town, and surrounding neighbourhoods. Local leaders have praised the initiative, saying it will bring essential services closer to underserved communities and reduce financial and logistical barriers for expectant mothers. Governor Kahiga also expressed gratitude to JOICFP and other stakeholders for their role in planning, funding, and supporting the project’s execution. With the finishing touches now underway, health officials expect the new maternity block to strengthen the county’s capacity to provide quality, dignified, and accessible maternal care for families across Nyeri.
