Nyamira residents protest exclusion from KeRRA road projects

Nyamira County residents have expressed outrage over their exclusion from the latest Kenya Rural Roads Authority (KeRRA) road upgrade projects for the 2025-2026 financial year. The agency recently issued a nationwide tender notice covering about 600 rural roads and bridges, but none of the projects listed fall within Nyamira’s four constituencies. Local leaders and residents have described the omission as unfair and discriminatory, with Borabu MP Patrick Osero warning that the county may seek legal recourse if the list is not revised.

According to Osero and other community representatives, the exclusion is particularly concerning given that neighbouring counties—such as Kisii, Kericho, Migori, and Homa Bay—received multiple allocations. Nyamira resident John Angwenyi Nyangera has formally petitioned KeRRA through lawyer Justus Maeche, describing the omission as a violation of constitutional principles of equity, fairness, and inclusiveness under Articles 10, 27, 174, 175, and 201. The petition demands that the list be reviewed and amended within seven days to include the county and to clarify the criteria used in project allocation.

The protest highlights growing concerns over equitable distribution of public resources and the need for transparency in government planning. Residents and local leaders insist that improved rural roads are critical for enhancing mobility, trade, and overall economic growth in the county. KeRRA had not issued an official response to the claims by press time, leaving the county on edge as legal and political pressure mounts. The outcome of this dispute is expected to influence not only Nyamira’s infrastructure development but also broader perceptions of fairness in nationwide project allocations.
