Nyamira County to introduce meals for ECDE schools to boost nutrition and enrolment

by KenyaPolls

Nyamira County has announced plans to launch a school meals program for over 30,000 learners in Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE) starting from the second term of 2025. Governor Amos Nyaribo revealed the initiative during the second annual Education Open Day held at Manga Stadium.

The Governor emphasized that the program aims to improve child nutrition while increasing school enrollment and retention. I believe under this nutrition policy, we will increase admissions of children in our ECDE classes, he stated.

The decision follows a baseline survey conducted by the County, which highlighted the need to enhance both registration and nutritional health of young learners. Governor Nyaribo also called on local Members of Parliament to support the initiative, stressing that education provision is a shared responsibility.

During the event, schools that performed exceptionally well in national examinations last year were recognized. Nyakongo Boys School topped in KCSE last year, achieving 100% university placement for its candidates. The County Education Board reported that 9,085 students secured direct entry to public universities with a mean grade of 6.2, showing an improvement from 2023.

The Governor reiterated his commitment to fostering talent, skills, and academic achievement as a pathway to sustainable development and breaking the chains of poverty.
