Nyamira County launches dairy breed improvement programme to boost milk production

by KenyaPolls

Nyamira County has rolled out a dairy breed improvement initiative to enhance milk production through heat synchronization and Artificial Insemination (AI).

Governor Amos Nyaribo noted that most local cows produce only 3–5 liters of milk per day, compared to 20–30 liters in other regions, due to inferior dairy breeds. The programme aims to introduce superior, disease-resistant breeds to increase milk yield and empower farmers economically while improving food security.

Veterinary officers will guide farmers on best practices, and the county targets insemination of 3,000 cows, with 1,512 already completed. The initiative also includes affordable soil testing to optimize forage production. The Kenya Veterinary Board emphasized the importance of licensed veterinarians to prevent misdiagnosis and livestock losses.
