The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has revealed a nationwide enforcement initiative preceding the Easter holidays, commencing on Friday, April 3.

NTSA Director General Nashon Kondiwa on Thursday, April 2, stated the initiative focuses on hazardous driving practices and unsound vehicles to diminish traffic accidents.

He mentioned the organization will collaborate closely with the National Police Service (NPS) to enhance operations across principal highways and urban areas during the peak travel period.

“Fellow drivers, as we observe this Easter period, I implore every motorist and traveler to emphasize safety on our thoroughfares,” Kondiwa declared.

Continuing, “NTSA, in partnership with the National Police Service, has heightened enforcement measures throughout the country to decrease fatal collisions during this holiday season.”

As part of the initiative, sobriety checkpoints will be established at strategic locations across the nation.

Likewise, the NTSA head mentioned that traffic officers will be positioned along major routes to observe compliance and address traffic infractions immediately.

Kondiwa appealed to drivers to emphasize safety, noting that dangerous behaviors such as excessive speed, intoxication while driving, and driver exhaustion persist as primary accident causes in the nation.

Motorists were counseled to follow speed restrictions, refrain from operating vehicles after alcohol consumption, and take periodic rest during extended trips.

During his address, the NTSA Director General cautioned that non-conforming vehicles, including those with mechanical issues like defective brakes, aged tires or inadequate lighting, will be confiscated instantly.

“For individuals experiencing vehicle breakdowns, ensure you position your vehicle securely off the thoroughfare and position warning triangles at an appropriate distance. Ultimately, vehicles in poor condition, those with malfunctioning brakes, worn tires, or defective illumination, will be impounded without delay,” he emphasized.

The initiative aims to create safer roadways for all Kenyans, especially during the four-day holiday period.
