The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has appointed Nashon Kondiwa as its new Director General for a three-year term, starting from February 17, 2026.
Mr. Kondiwa, with more than 22 years of experience in ICT, innovation, intelligent transport systems, and digital transformation, previously held the position of Deputy Director of ICT at NTSA.
In this capacity, he led the authority’s digital transformation initiatives and enhanced service delivery methods.
Announcing the appointment, NTSA Board Chairman Hon. Khatib Abdallah Mwashetani stated: “The Board is confident that Mr. Kondiwa’s proven expertise in ICT leadership, strategic vision, and deep institutional knowledge will guide NTSA to even greater achievements.”
Established under the NTSA Act of 2012, the authority is tasked with regulating and coordinating road transport in Kenya.
Its primary responsibilities include registering and licensing motor vehicles, implementing road safety policies, conducting vehicle inspections, and enforcing traffic regulations.
NTSA also plays a crucial role in reducing accidents and aligning the operations of various transport departments.
Kondiwa assumes the position at a time when NTSA confronts substantial challenges.
Road traffic accidents continue to be a significant public safety concern, with policy gaps and non-compliance undermining safety measures.
The authority has also faced criticism for inefficiencies, limited institutional capacity, and mismanagement of key initiatives like the smart driving license project.
Recent audits have additionally exposed vulnerabilities in NTSA’s management of its digital systems, prompting concerns about accountability and data protection.
