NPS Launches Manhunt for Al-Shabaab Suspects After Chief, Teacher Killed in Garissa

The National Police Service has initiated a manhunt following a suspected Al-Shabaab attack in Hulugho, Garissa County, which resulted in the deaths of a teacher and a local chief.

In a statement released on Monday, January 26, the service reported that Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja had directed a multi-agency security team to the region to locate the attackers and ensure their legal prosecution.

NPS spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga confirmed that security forces are actively tracking those involved in the incident.

“A multi-agency security team is actively pursuing the perpetrators of this cowardly act. The area has been secured, and an operation is ongoing to apprehend those responsible and ensure they face the full force of the law,” the statement read.

“We understand the anxiety and concern such incidents cause residents and all Kenyans. We strongly wish to reassure the public, particularly in Hulugho, Garissa County, that their safety and security remain our utmost priority,” it added.

The National Police Service, under the leadership of the Inspector General, remains unwavering in its commitment to protect and serve the public. We will not be deterred by criminal acts and are resolute in safeguarding the lives and property of all Kenyans, residents, and visitors.

Garissa MP Edo Udgoon Siyad expressed deep sorrow over the deaths, noting that the loss extends beyond the affected families to the wider Garissa community.

“I send my condolences to the families of Chief Abdi Gani Owl and the dedicated teacher, both of whom served the Hulugho community with unwavering commitment,” Siyad said.

“We condemn this senseless violence and stand united in support of all affected. May Chief Gani rest in Jannatul Firdaus, and may the teacher’s family find strength and peace,” she added.
