New Training Center Opens to Support Teacher Development in Nairobi

by KenyaPolls

On August 9, 2025, the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) announced the launch of a new training initiative in Nairobi aimed at helping teachers with P1 and ECDE certificates upgrade to diploma-level qualifications. This center is part of KUCCPS’s expanded placement strategy to increase access to higher education and professional development for educators. The facility offers structured programs aligned with the Diploma in Primary Teacher Education (DPTE) and Diploma in Early Childhood Teacher Education (DECTE), supporting Kenya’s Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) rollout.
The training center provides both residential and blended learning options, allowing teachers to balance classroom duties with professional growth. It is equipped with digital learning tools, mentorship support, and CBC-aligned content delivery. The center also serves as a hub for continuous professional development (CPD), offering refresher courses in pedagogy, learner assessment, and inclusive education. KUCCPS confirmed that the upgrade program is now part of its official student placement system, enabling teachers to apply through the portal for September 2025 intake.
This development follows a surge in applications for teacher training colleges (TTCs), with over 13,823 slots available nationwide for diploma programs. Nairobi’s new center is expected to absorb a significant portion of these applicants, especially those seeking flexible learning options and urban-based facilities. Education stakeholders have praised the move, noting that it will improve teaching standards, enhance CBC implementation, and support career progression for thousands of educators.
