Health Cabinet Secretary Susan Nakhumicha has launched a nationwide blood donation drive, calling on Kenyans to voluntarily donate blood in order to strengthen the national blood supply. She emphasized that the Ministry of Health has already set up blood collection satellite centres in all 47 counties, bringing donation points closer to communities.
The government aims to collect more than 500,000 units of blood during this drive, in response to growing demand for safe blood for surgeries, maternal care, and emergencies. To support this, the Ministry is also scaling up its Damu‑KE blood banking system, a digital track-and-trace platform that improves accountability for donated blood from the point of collection to transfusion.
In Samburu County—where the national World Blood Donor Day celebrations were held—CS Aden Duale officially opened a local blood satellite centre. At the same event, 100 community health volunteers registered with the Social Health Authority, strengthening grassroots support for blood donation.
Meanwhile, Meru County is running its own 30-day blood drive in partnership with the Kenya Red Cross. Governor Isaac Mutuma encouraged residents to bring in groups—from churches, workplaces, and community groups—to donate, noting that one unit of blood can save up to three lives.
