NCIC Raises Alarm Over Rising Violence in Isiolo County
The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) has raised a red flag over the escalating violence and inter-communal clashes in Isiolo County. The commission expressed deep concern that the conflicts, primarily between herder communities, are taking on a dangerous ethnic dimension, threatening national cohesion. The NCIC warned that the situation, if left unchecked, could spiral into widespread violence.
According to the NCIC, the clashes are fueled by a toxic mix of political incitement, competition for pasture and water, and the proliferation of small arms. The commission has documented an increase in hate speech and inflammatory rhetoric, both online and at public gatherings, which is hardening ethnic identities and fueling retaliatory attacks. The volatile situation has led to deaths, injuries, and the displacement of families.
The NCIC has called for immediate and decisive action from the national government, including the disarmament of all communities, the arrest of politicians and influencers fanning hatred, and the initiation of an inclusive peace process. The commission urged local leaders to preach peace and reconciliation, warning that the continued violence undermines development and the social fabric of the region.
