The Kenya Karate Federation (KKF) received the 2025 World Karate Federation Gender Equity Award in Tokyo on October 17, 2025—for achieving 52% female participation across all levels, including 60% of black belts under 18 and 45% of national team coaches. Their *Girls in Gi* program—offering free dojos in informal settlements—reached 14,000 girls in 2 years. Karate teaches respect, not just kicks, said KKF President Jane Muthoni. The federation also introduced menstrual leave for elite athletes and childcare at national camps. Judo and Taekwondo federations are adopting the model. The award includes a USD 50,000 grant for rural dojos.
