Tensions Rise as Narok Residents Protest Court Ruling on Olkiombo Land

Narok, Kenya – Tension erupted in Narok County after residents stormed the disputed Olkiombo land following a Lands Court ruling that awarded 4,000 acres to Livingstone Ntutu, brother of Governor Patrick Ole Ntutu. The decision, issued on March 6, 2025, sparked outrage among the Maasai community, who set some structures ablaze in protest and held symbolic cultural rituals to assert their ancestral claims.

Narok West MP Gabriel Tongoyo condemned the ruling, calling it a blatant land theft and asserting that the Maasai people would continue to fight for their community land. Residents, who have lived on portions of the land for generations, argue that the court decision disregards their historical and cultural ties to the area. Governor Ntutu clarified that the dispute is a personal claim by his brother and not a family-wide legal conflict with the county. He further instructed the county legal team to review the judgment and advise on the next steps.

In response, the Narok County Council filed an appeal the following day, challenging the court’s decision and seeking a review of the entire suit. Authorities are calling for calm while legal processes unfold, emphasizing the need to balance the enforcement of judicial rulings with respect for the rights and concerns of the local community. As the matter continues, both residents and officials are closely monitoring the situation, wary of further unrest in the area.
