Narok, Kenya – Narok County is facing a serious public health crisis as a cholera outbreak has claimed five lives and left dozens hospitalized in Trans Mara West and surrounding wards. The county government has responded with emergency measures, including the closure of eateries, suspension of public gatherings involving food, and a ban on the sale of cooked food in open markets. County officials confirmed the outbreak on October 6, 2025, following the admission of multiple patients at Trans Mara West County Hospital exhibiting severe diarrhea and vomiting.

The outbreak has hit Shankoe, Lolgorian, Alopiikidongoi, and Kilgoris Central wards hardest, with 45 people currently receiving treatment. Health officials report that patients present with classic cholera symptoms, including acute watery diarrhea, severe vomiting, and dehydration. Laboratory tests conducted at Trans Mara West Hospital and Walter Reed Kericho confirmed the presence of Vibrio cholerae bacteria. Local residents have recounted harrowing experiences, with some requiring immediate hospitalization due to severe fluid loss and shock.

Narok County Director of Health, Lucy Kashu, emphasized the need for strict hygiene practices, urging residents to wash hands regularly, treat drinking water, and handle food safely. Community Health Promoters have been deployed across villages to educate the public, while temporary cholera treatment units have been set up to manage new cases. The Kenya Red Cross Society is working alongside county authorities, providing protective equipment, motorbikes for outreach, and water treatment supplies. Officials have also directed that burials in affected areas be conducted within 24 hours to prevent further transmission.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, coordinating with national health officials and local communities to contain the disease. Residents are advised to report suspected cases promptly and adhere to the county’s emergency measures.
