Nairobi’s transformation of disused sewer and utility tunnels into the Nairobi Underground Athletics Circuit—featuring 200m tracks, long jump pits, and recovery zones—won the 2025 *World Architecture Festival Award for Urban Regeneration* on June 20, 2025. Judges praised its radical reclamation of forgotten space for community health. The project, led by Studio M, used recycled materials and kinetic lighting powered by runner motion. Over 3,000 youth now train weekly across 5 tunnels; crime in surrounding areas dropped 58%. Cities don’t lack space—they lack imagination, said lead architect Evans Mwangi. The World Bank has funded replication in Lagos and Dar es Salaam.
