In November 2025, Nairobi’s small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) expanded their reach through strategic e-commerce partnerships, marking a major step in the county’s digital transformation agenda. The initiative was part of the Business Digital Transformation Program (April 2025) and built on earlier efforts such as the Digital Training Programs (September 2025) and the Business Growth Program (October 2025).
Through these partnerships, SMEs gained access to regional and global online marketplaces, enabling them to showcase products, streamline logistics, and integrate secure digital payment systems. Nairobi County collaborated with leading fintech firms, logistics providers, and e-commerce platforms to ensure that SMEs could scale operations efficiently while reducing costs associated with traditional retail.
Entrepreneurs welcomed the move, noting that e-commerce partnerships help them overcome challenges such as limited market access, high rental expenses, and fragmented supply chains. Analysts argue that the expansion is transformative for Nairobi’s economy, embedding digital platforms into everyday commerce and positioning the city as a leader in East Africa’s digital trade ecosystem. The program also complements initiatives like the Export Growth Fund (November 2025) and Local Export Partnerships (November 2025), creating a comprehensive framework for SME competitiveness.
Looking ahead, Nairobi County plans to integrate e-commerce partnerships with AI-powered customer insights, blockchain-based trade certification, and green supply chain practices. Officials believe that by embedding digital platforms into SME growth, Nairobi can accelerate job creation, attract foreign investment, and reinforce its role as East Africa’s commercial hub.
