On July 18, 2025, President William Ruto announced the release of KSh 220 million to support critical infrastructure upgrades at two of Nairobi’s leading public secondary schools—Nairobi School and State House Girls High School. The funding was part of a broader national effort to improve learning environments ahead of the new term, which began in September 2025. The announcement followed an inspection tour by the President earlier in the year, during which he pledged to prioritize school infrastructure in urban counties facing rising enrollment.
At Nairobi School, KSh 150 million was allocated for the construction of a state-of-the-art science complex, a 1,000-bed dormitory, and 12 new classrooms. These facilities were scheduled for completion before the start of the new term to accommodate the school’s growing population of nearly 2,000 students. Meanwhile, State House Girls received KSh 70 million for similar upgrades, including dormitory expansion and classroom rehabilitation. Both schools were among those identified for fast-tracked improvements due to their strategic role in national education performance.
The renovations are part of a larger infrastructure push that includes President Ruto’s pledge to build over 3,500 new classrooms across Nairobi to address overcrowding and support the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). The Ministry of Education and the Nairobi County Government have committed to monitoring the renovation works to ensure quality and timely delivery. School heads and boards of management were tasked with overseeing implementation and reporting progress through the county’s education dashboard.
Education stakeholders have welcomed the upgrades, noting that improved infrastructure enhances learner safety, academic performance, and teacher morale. The renovations are expected to set a benchmark for future school improvement projects across the county. Additional schools in informal settlements and high-density areas are also slated for renovation under the 2025/2026 School Infrastructure Revitalization Plan, with phased rollouts continuing into 2026.
