Local manufacturing firms in Nairobi are increasingly integrating robotics and automation technologies into their operations to lift productivity and remain competitive in the global market. This pivot comes amid growing pressure from government and industry leaders to modernise production lines and adopt more efficient, high‑tech manufacturing models. Historically, many Nairobi-based factories have relied on manual or semi-automated processes, but a recent push for automation is gaining momentum. According to TraceData Research, Kenya’s automation and robotics manufacturing market—which includes Nairobi—is rapidly growing, driven by increased investment in collaborative robots (cobots) and control systems. At the 2024 Kenya Industrialization Conference, executives from the Kenya Association of Manufacturers emphasised the need for AI and robotics adoption to make local production more competitive. Meanwhile, academic studies suggest that while only a minority of Nairobi manufacturers currently deploy industrial robots, integrating such systems could significantly boost output and efficiency in the long run.The response from Nairobi’s business community paints a mixed picture. Supporters argue that robotics can reduce error rates, lower labour costs, and even encourage export-oriented production by meeting higher global standards. On the other hand, some manufacturers are cautious, pointing to high initial capital investment, skills gaps, and uncertainty around the return on investment. In response, industry leaders are calling for better financing models, government incentives, and stronger partnerships with universities and automation specialists to support the adoption of robotics. Looking ahead, analysts say Nairobi could become a regional automation hub if the trend continues. As more firms deploy robotics and smart systems, the city’s manufacturing base may shift toward higher-value production, with improved quality, consistency, and volume. With strategic policy support and investment, Nairobi’s industrial landscape is poised for a transformation—one that could drive not just efficiency, but also economic growth and export competitiveness.
