NAIROBI, Kenya – May 28, 2024 – Nairobi City County, in collaboration with the Danish Embassy and the Kenya Alliance of Residents Associations (KARA), has launched a pilot program to promote waste segregation at the source at Ngei 2 Estate. The initiative includes the distribution of assorted waste bags and bins to residents to encourage proper sorting of household waste.

County Assistant Director for Environmental Monitoring, Compliance, and Enforcement, Ms. Christine Kivuva, emphasized that the partnership aims to strengthen the implementation of the Sustainable Solid Waste Management Act of 2022. She noted that a review of existing county laws governing solid waste management is underway, incorporating guidelines on Extended Producer Responsibility and Material Recovery Facilities to ensure a more efficient and inclusive waste management system.

Other areas of collaboration include public education and awareness campaigns, socio-economic surveys of waste pickers at final disposal sites, and support for ongoing waste segregation initiatives in partnership with KARA. This pilot program marks a significant step toward sustainable waste management practices in Nairobi, aligning with the county’s broader environmental goals.
