Nairobi Embarks on Ambitious Smart Street Lighting Upgrade
Nairobi County is set to transform its street lighting infrastructure with a cutting-edge modernization project aimed at improving urban safety and energy efficiency. The initiative will see approximately 100,000 streetlights upgraded or newly installed across the city, featuring energy-saving LED lamps and a centralized smart management system. The project, which follows a Build-Transfer-Operate (BTO) model, is designed to ensure both short-term efficiency and long-term operational sustainability.
The proposed Smart Street Lighting Project involves retrofitting existing streetlights with LED technology, installing new LED fixtures where needed, and introducing a Common Management System (CMS) powered by ultra-narrowband technology. This system will enable real-time monitoring and management of streetlights, allowing Nairobi County to optimize energy usage, reduce maintenance costs, and respond promptly to outages. The initiative, which falls under the broader Smart Cities agenda, is expected to set new standards for urban infrastructure management in Kenya. The County is currently reviewing the feasibility study and plans to procure a private partner through an open competitive tender.
