Police Seize Sh5 Million Bhang in Homa Bay Student Hostel Raid
Police in Homa Bay have recovered cannabis sativa (bhang) with an estimated street value of Sh5 million in a targeted raid on a private hostel housing university students. The multi-agency operation, which took place on Tuesday, led to the arrest of a 24-year-old suspect believed to be a key distributor in a local drug trafficking network.
According to Homa Bay County Police Commander, Moses Lilan, the operation was launched following a tip-off from members of the public regarding drug peddling in the area. Officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Anti-Narcotics Unit raided the hostel located near a local university, where they discovered 20 kilograms of the illicit drug meticulously packaged in several bags. The suspect was apprehended at the scene and is currently in police custody awaiting arraignment.
This is a significant seizure that disrupts the supply chain of narcotics targeting our youth, particularly students, stated Commander Lilan. We are intensifying our war on drugs and substance abuse in Homa Bay, and this operation sends a clear message to peddlers that their days are numbered. The police commander further urged learning institutions and landlords to be vigilant and report suspicious activities within their premises.
The raid is part of a broader crackdown on illicit drugs and brews in the Nyanza region, which has seen increased multi-agency operations in recent weeks. The seizure has been welcomed by community leaders and anti-drug advocates, who have long expressed concern over the rising substance abuse among young people. As investigations continue, police are pursuing leads to uncover the broader network and source of the narcotics, signaling a sustained effort to dismantle drug trafficking rings in the region.
